Microtunnelling only requires two pits to be excavated

Under the beaten track

Working with Gippsland Water on its $13 million Warragul sewer upgrade, Edge Underground has completed the delicate process of burrowing more than 100 metres underneath Princes Way and a railway line to make way for a new wastewater pipeline in Drouin, Victoria. The four kilometre sewer line will allow residential and industrial properties near Burke and Howitt Streets to finally be connected to the sewerage system, rather than relying on septic tanks. The new sewerage system will also cater to expected future growth in the Warragul region. The works, which follow more than two years of planning and design in...

Pipes at a microtunnelling site

Can AXIS be used for jobs with diameters greater than 900mm?

Vermeer AXIS inventor Stuart Harrison is constantly working to further expand the capabilities of the AXIS system. Currently, the largest installation it has completed is 900mm, but Stuart is currently working on a new back reamer for the system, which could see AXIS installing pipe up to 1.2 m in diameter. He is also working to improve the system’s sustainability credentials, with a current focus on reducing the amount of slurry waste produced by the machine. He is also about to commence trials that will see the water used by the system recycled.

Independent experts – what the microtunnelling sector needs

Sometimes things can get ugly between subcontractors and project owners when a project doesn’t go to plan. Usually this happens when they cannot agree about who should assume responsibility for unforeseen circumstances and the costs they incur. As I’ve discussed in previous posts, this risk can be minimised by making sure that the contracts between parties take into account the possibility of unexpected complications. In addition, many of the disputes I hear about between microtunnelling subcontractors and project owners could be much more easily resolved if independent experts in the microtunnelling sector could be called upon to assess each case...

Absolutely precise pipeline installation

An absolutely precise installation

Edge Underground were recently called upon to help complete a microtunnelling crossing for the Murilla Shire Council in Queensland. Lead contractor Shadforths Civil Contractors engaged Edge Underground to complete two road crossings and a rail crossing in order to complete the job. Each of the microtunnelling crossings required five precision horizontal bores to be completed for essential services including stormwater, sewer and water. For each crossing, these five bores were all completed from the same pit. When the Edge Underground crew arrived on site, there was concern regarding the ground conditions of clay and rock, and there was concern regarding...
