Locals in Warragul, Victoria, are becoming increasingly familiar with Edge Underground crews on site, and there’s a good reason for it.
After a strong history of delivering successful trenchless projects for Gippsland Water in the region, Edge Underground recently completed another standout microtunnelling job, this time for Fulton Hogan.
The complex installation involved 14 bores across multiple pipe sizes, with outside diameters ranging from 460mm to 580mm and bore lengths between 26 and 92 metres. In total, more than 800 metres of pipe was installed underground, navigating difficult conditions such as sandy clay and greasy grey clay.
To maintain high productivity and pinpoint accuracy, Edge Underground utilised its upgraded AXIS machines – now enhanced with AdaptX technology – to adapt quickly to the varied ground conditions.
The AdaptX was developed in-house by Edge Underground founder and CEO of Edge Underground’s parent company, OptionX Group, Stuart Harrison. The machine is a versatile, next-generation system designed specifically for challenging microtunnelling environments. In this project, the team used semi closed-face cutters instead of standard two-bar clay cutters, which significantly improved performance by accelerating progress and producing cleaner bores, something that is critical in high-traffic, built-up areas.
The confined site made the job an ideal candidate for the upgraded AXIS machine, which offers impressive power in a compact footprint, a must for tight urban spaces.
“This kind of job really demonstrates what AdaptX is built for,” said Harrison.
“Fulton Hogan always sets a high benchmark for project delivery, so we’re proud to be one of their trusted partners.”
This project adds to Edge Underground’s long-standing relationship with Gippsland Water and strengthens the company’s reputation for handling complex trenchless installations in difficult environments.
With deep expertise in local conditions and a passion for innovation, Edge Underground continues to push boundaries and deliver smarter trenchless solutions across Australia.
